Long-Term in vivo Evaluation of Orthotypical and Heterotypical Bioengineered Human Corneas.

2020

Purpose: Human cornea substitutes generated by tissue engineering currently require limbal stem cells for the generation of orthotypical epithelial cell cultures. We recently reported that bioengineered corneas can be fabricated in vitro from a heterotypical source obtained from Wharton’s jelly in the human umbilical cord (HWJSC). Methods: Here, we generated a partial thickness cornea model based on plastic compression nanostructured fibrin-agarose biomaterials with cornea epithelial cells on top, as an orthotypical model (HOC), or with HWJSC, as a heterotypical model (HHC), and determined their potential in vivo usefulness by implantation in an animal model. Results: No major side effects …

Evaluation of the anterior chamber angle in keratoconus and normal subjects.

2015

To evaluate the anterior chamber angle in keratoconus eyes by use of the Visante™ OCT and Orbscan™ II.Anterior chamber angle was measured with the Visante™ OCT and Orbscan™ II in 52 subjects, 26 KC subjects and 26 age and control subjects. When comparing the nasal and temporal angles obtained with the two techniques no correlation was found (R(2) always below 0.01) in either the control subjects or in the KC subjects. Despite this, there was an overall statistically significant difference in mean anterior chamber angles (p0.001) between Visante™ OCT and Orbscan™ II. There was no statistical difference (p0.05) between nasal and temporal anterior chamber angles when comparing controls and KC s…

Measuring corneal clouding in patients suffering from mucopolysaccharidosis with the Pentacam densitometry programme

2013

Aim To identify a means to objectively measure corneal clouding in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis in a prospective controlled clinical trial. Methods Corneal haze was assessed by slit lamp examination and measured using the densitometry programme of the Pentacam, a rotating Scheimpflug camera in 33 mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) patients and 32 controls. Results Pentacam measurements were available in 31 right and 31 left eyes of 32 patients and in 32 left and right eyes of 32 subjects in the control group. Slit lamp findings correlated very well with corneal density measurements (Spearman correlation right eye (OD)/left eye (OS)=0.782/0.791). MPS patients had higher density units (median…

Visualization of corneal vascularization in peripheral hypertrophic subepithelial corneal opacification with OCT angiography.

2018

Purpose The major goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that in patients with peripheral hypertrophic subepithelial corneal opacification (PHSCO), visualization of corneal vessels is better with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) than with conventional slit lamp microphotography. Methods Patients with PHSCO were included in this prospective study. The corneal findings were photographed using a slit lamp camera (Haag Streit BM 900® ) and visualized with anterior-segment OCT (Optovue XR Avanti, Fremont, California, USA). Additionally, OCTA with the Angiovue Imaging™ System was performed in the area of PHSCO. Results Thirty-four eyes of 19 patients (26% male and 74% female…

Subclinical optic neuropathy in Fabry disease.

2009

Fabry disease is a rare X-linked lysosomal storage disorder, caused by the deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A. Ophthalmic features comprise a cornea verticillata, conjunctival aneurysms, tortuous conjunctival and/or retinal vessels, and anterior and posterior subcapsular cataracts. The issue of a possible subclinical optic neuropathy in Fabry disease has been raised recently. In this pilot study, we looked for signs of optic neuropathy in our cohort of Fabry patients.Thirty-one Fabry patients (15 male, 16 female, mean age 34 years) underwent an ophthalmological investigation consisting of assessment of best corrected visual acuity, slit lamp investigation, testing of pupillary reaction, fu…

Evaluating tear clearance rate with optical coherence tomography

2017

Purpose: To assess the early-phase of tear clearance rate (TCR) with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) and to determine the association between TCR and other clinical measures of the tear film in a group of young subjects with different levels of tear film quality. Methods: TCR was classified as the percentage decrease of the inferior tear meniscus height 30s after instillation of 5uL 0.9% saline solution. Fifty subjects (32F and 18M) aged (mean +/- standard deviation) 25.5 +/- 4.3 years volunteered for the study. It consisted of a review of medical history, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, tear film osmolarity measurements, slit lamp examination and TCR …

XEN-augmented Baerveldt Implantation for Refractory Childhood Glaucoma: A Retrospective Case Series

2019

Background Tube implants can lead to long-term decompensation of the cornea after decades, in particular in complicated childhood glaucoma, because of a variety of causes including contact between the tube tip and the corneal endothelium. The augmentation of a XEN implant with a Baerveldt (250) tube implant, introduced 2016 by Mermoud et al for refractory glaucoma in adult patients, may reduce this risk in children. In our retrospective study, we report on the XEN-augmented Baerveldt (250) tube implant in children. Patients and methods Ten consecutive patients with refractory childhood glaucoma who underwent XEN-augmented Baerveldt implantation by a single surgeon (F.G.) between January 201…

ANATOMICAL AND FUNCTIONAL OUTCOMES OF SYMPTOMATIC IDIOPATHIC VITREOMACULAR TRACTION

2016

To describe the natural history of eyes with symptomatic idiopathic vitreomacular traction (VMT).Retrospective multicenter study of 168 eyes with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings consistent with idiopathic VMT. All eyes were graded according to SD-OCT findings. Grade 1 was defined as incomplete cortical vitreous separation with foveal attachment. Grade 2 was defined as Grade 1 plus intraretinal cysts or clefts. Grade 3 was defined as Grade 2 plus a foveal detachment. All patients were followed for at least 6 months. There were 168 patients (51 men) with a mean age of 68.8 ± 10.7 years. Patients were followed for a mean of 22.7 ± 20.1 months. The mean duration of…

Super-resolution-based magnification of endothelium cells from biomicroscope videos of the cornea

2018

We present a practical, robust, and effective pipeline to compute a high-resolution (HR) image of the corneal endothelium starting from a low-resolution (LR) video sequence obtained with a general purpose slit lamp biomicroscope. An image quality typical of dedicated and more expensive confocal microscopes is achieved via software magnification by exploiting information redundancy in the video sequence. In particular, the HR image is generated from the best LR frames, obtained by identifying the most suitable endothelium video subsequence using a support vector machine-based learning approach, followed by a robust graph-based frame registration. Results on long, real sequences show that the…
